Coaching is a way to support and guide a
person to develop new skills, solve a problem, or reach a goal.
Training workshops can begin to develop skills but coaching
takes it to the next level by providing consistent feedback.
This type of feedback can be provided by one’s manager but often
managers are overwhelmed, overloaded, or don’t have the skills to do
much coaching. Intensive and focused feedback offered from an
expert outside of the organization usually gets better results
in a shorter period of time.
The
Coaching Process
Cheryl Binda helps individuals
assess their strengths and areas needing improvement. Coaching is
conducted with confidentiality, either on- or off-site. The focus
is on assessment, awareness, personal growth, and problem solving in
a collaborative environment. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
is an especially effective tool in coaching situations.
Typically, the personal coaching process involves four steps:
-
Identification of the problem or
challenge
-
Development of strategies
-
Feedback
-
Action planning
Ensuring Coaching Success
The coaching process works best when:
-
There are specific, measurable goals
-
There is a commitment or desire to
improve
-
There is trust among all the parties
involved (the coach, the person being coached, and the
organization/department in which the person works)
-
There is agreement on what will
constitute a successful outcome
| "I never cease to be amazed at the power of
the coaching process to draw out the skills or talent that was
previously hidden within an individual, and which invariably finds a
way to solve a problem previously thought unsolvable."
